Disney Princess Theory

Disney princess theory is an idea that has been gaining traction that suggests that all of Disney’s princess movies allegorically demonstrate a coming of age story in which the protagonist breaks away from the constraints of traditional gender roles and actively engages with the world around them. This theory suggests that the different story arcs of many of Disney’s classic movies reflect a desire to break out of and transcend the traditional gender roles of their times. Themes of freedom and autonomy, self-realization and resistance, self-expression and personal growth, agency and self-efficacy are all themes present throughout many different princess stories.
