The week of February 11, 2023, saw stocks remain generally flat, as investors mostly had their eyes on the upcoming stimulus package negotiations in Congress. The Dow lost 0.40%, the S&P 500 lost 0.84%, and the NASDAQ Composite declined 0.63%.
Tech stocks, particularly those focused on software, performed well during the week. Microsoft (MSFT) rose 3.87% after announcing a billion stock repurchase program, while Oracle (ORCL) gained 4.02% after posting quarterly revenue results that beat analysts estimates.
However, the energy sector underperformed, with Chevron (CVX) dropping 1.90%, ExxonMobil (XOM) down 4.22%, and ConocoPhillips (COP) losing 2.23%. OPEC’s decision to cut production by an additional 500,000 barrels per day weighed on oil prices, leading to the sell-off in energy stocks.
The healthcare sector was mixed. Biotech giant Amgen (AMGN) rose 2.78% on strong sales, while Merck (MRK) declined 1.09% following its announcement that it would raise prices of some drugs.
Elsewhere, investors were looking ahead to potential stimulus package news. In particular, airline stocks rose as investors looked for a possible extension of aid for the industry, with Delta Airlines (DAL) up 1.93% and United Airlines (UAL) gaining 2.50%.
Overall, it was a relatively quiet week on the markets, with investors holding tight as they awaited news from Congress. Here are the charts of over 150 of the stocks that made headlines during the week:
