UK FTSE 100:
The FTSE 100 has continued to climb steadily this month, increasing from 6,470 points on the 1st of December to 6,904 points at the close of the month. As such, investors have seen positive returns in the index this month, with a return of 6.3%. This has been driven in large part by strong performance by the large-cap stocks within the index. This is a positive outcome and demonstrates the resilience of the UK Markets.
Europe:
The European markets have been mostly in positive territory this month, with the Euro Stoxx 50 increasing by 4.9%. This increase was driven by strong growth in the technology and banking sectors, which posted solid gains. Investors in the region have seen positive returns over the month, with German stocks posting particularly strong gains.
Emerging Markets:
Emerging market stocks were less impressive this month, with the MSCI Emerging Markets Index decreasing by 0.6%. This decrease was mainly driven by weakness in China, which saw the Shanghai Composite Index falling by 4.4%. Other emerging market stocks were more resilient, however, with India’s Sensex posting a gain of 1.1% and Brazil’s Ibovespa increasing by 3.2%.
Commodities:
Commodity prices were mostly in positive territory this month, with the Bloomberg Commodity Index increasing by 1.7%. This increase was mainly driven by gains in energy prices, mainly from crude oil, which saw prices rising by 6.6%. Gold also posted a gain of 1.2%, while copper and silver were relatively flat.
